How Organizations Can Shape the Future for Women of color

Mentor Program

In both our business and personal life, we should always be looking for ways to develop our skills, expand our knowledge of things, and challenge ourselves and others. Having a mentor, somebody who can help guide, advise and teach you through a problem or towards a goal, is a great way to stay on track. Mentoring is beneficial beyond the mentee’s personal development, it benefits the mentors themselves, as well as for the organization. Mentoring is beneficial in supporting inclusion through the exposure of new perspectives, the chance of promotion, and new opportunities. (Cronin, 2019)

Advancement

Research indicates that sexism and racism adversely affect women of color in a professional setting. It affects women of color in a variety of occupations in a variety of ways. For instance, leadership opportunities are nearly absent for women of color, the ongoing persistent forms of sexual harassment, and subtle doubts about intelligence, skill, and competence. A company needs to place a clear path for opportunities for women and specifically women of color to advance and promote in their positions. (Wingfield, 2020)

Educating

Teach those in companies and the community how women of color are disadvantaged. Educating others is important because it helps end the discrimination, it helps break the gap that puts women of color at a disadvantage. By educating, others can understand the privileges they carry and can put them into good use by becoming allies of women of color. The advocacy for women of color will increase and can potentially break all those systematic challenges.

Awareness

Women of color are often the only ones in their department. Very few women of color are seen in leadership roles. This creates a sense of isolation that affects their chances of success. As we all may be aware, isolation can cause a lot of damage to a person's mental health. Raising awareness of the isolation of being a leader as women can cause will help give women more opportunities to take leadership positions. Offering mental health guidance to women of color can be very beneficial.
